Investigators: Fire began in a flower pot

Blaze non-criminal in nature but cause undetermined

The fire that caused $350,000 in damage to a Morris home last week began in a plastic flower pot on the front porch, Morris Fire Chief Tracey Steffes announced Wednesday.

The cause of the blaze is undetermined, but there was no evidence of foul play.

On July 17, the Morris Fire Protection and Ambulance District responded to a fire at 1055 Park Boulevard.
Heavy fire was showing on the front of the house and quickly spread to the second floor.

By the time firefighters — working through the sweltering temperatures of last week’s heat wave — extinguished the fire, the home had sustained $250,000 of structure damage and $100,000 to personal belongings.

Morris Fire, the Illinois State Fire Marshal Office and MABAS Division 15 investigated and determined the fire originated in a flower pot on the front porch, but could not determine an exact cause.

The investigation determined the fire was not suspicious nor criminal in nature, Steffes announced.
The property has been released to an insurance company.
