Saint Joseph contributes nearly $30 million in community benefits

JOLIET — Presence Saint Joseph Medical Center contributed more than $29.1 million in community benefits to residents of the Joliet area and helped a total of 77,681 people last year.

The Presence Saint Joseph community benefits for the Joliet area include:

• $8.5 million  in Financial Assist-ance (at cost) – the cost of providing free or discounted health services for those who could not afford to pay and met the criteria for financial assistance.

• $18.5 million in Medicaid Short-fall (at cost) – the unpaid costs of public programs for those with low income or a disability.

• $2.3 million in Community Benefit Services – programs and activities to improve community health, educate health professionals, conduct research studies, provide subsidized clinical services and support community organizations.

Additional benefits include nearly $48 million in bad debt (expenses for which services were provided but no payment was received) and $11 million in Medicare shortfall.

In total, Presence Health contributed nearly $168 million in community benefits statewide and helped more than 847,000 people, according to the system-wide 2012 Community Benefit Report, which was also released today.
