The damage to a garage and pontoon boat at 5860 E. Muskie Trail in Goose Lake Township is clearly visible in the aftermath of a fire Thursday afternoon. Firefighters, however, were able to minimize, if not entirely prevent, the spread of the blaze to the interior of the home.

GOOSE LAKE TWP. — A fire in a garage and pontoon boat spread to a house Thursday afternoon on Muskie Trail in Goose Lake Township.

A call came into Coal City Fire District at about 2:30 p.m. for a structure fire at 5860 E. Muskie Trail, said Nick Doerfler, spokesperson for the Coal City Fire Protection District.

“They found heavy fire in a garage and in a boat. It is still under investigation,” said Doerfler Thursday evening.

The cause of the fire and whether it started in the garage or boat is still being determined.

There was one occupant in the house who called 9-1-1 and who was trying to extinguish the fire with a water hose when responders arrived, said Doerfler.

No one was injured in the incident.

Damage occurred to the neighbor’s vehicle and basketball hoop due to the heat from the fire. About $40,000 worth of damage occurred to the garage, boat and house where the fire originally occurred.

A MABAS 15 box alarm was called for the fire, but the assisting departments were quickly returned due to the original responders diligent work.

“The chief said the initial crews did a fantastic job on the initial attack, holding the fire to the original area when they arrived,” said Doerfler.

“There was minimal damage, if any, to the interior of the house.”
