Governor signs law to protect small businesses

Brings business owners into planning for nearby road closures

SPRINGFIELD – Last week, Gov. Pat Quinn signed into law a proposal designed to help businesses maintain their consumer traffic while road construction is under way.

The new law brings business owners into the planning process when road projects are proposed adjacent to their businesses.

It requires the Illinois Department of Transportation to meet with businesses near upcoming construction zones before the start of the project to identify business needs and reduce project impacts.

“Road projects are obviously vital to the transportation needs of Illinois,” Sen. Jennifer Bertino-Tarrant said.

“However, businesses can suffer due to lengthy construction and road closures. Making sure that we do what we can to support our small businesses is important.”

The new law will take effect Jan. 1.
