NEW LENOX – Silver Cross Hospital recently honored two members of the medical staff, Dr. Daniel Gutierrez and Dr. Salvador Rinella, for their 40 years of service to the Silver Cross medical staff.
Born and raised on Joliet’s east side, Gutierrez began his career at Silver Cross Hospital as a surgical orderly while attending Joliet Township High School. He graduated from the University of Illinois College of Medicine in Chicago with his medical degree.
At Silver Cross, he served as chief of staff, director of continuing medical education and chairman of the Department of Medicine, as well as on the Credentials Committee. He also was instrumental in initiating the Joliet PPO.
Rinella was born in Chicago and currently resides in Flossmoor.
He graduated from Loyola University Stritch School of Medicine in Maywood with his medical degree.
He completed his residency at St. Francis Hospital of Evanston and is board certified in both radiology and nuclear medicine.
During his military service, he served two years in the U.S. Navy as part of the Berry Plan from 1967 to 1969. As part of the Navy, his first year was spent on the Nuclear Ballistic Missile Submarine, USS John C. Calhoun, SSBN 630. He subsequently spent the second year as the first and only assistant to the Chief of Dependent Surgery at the Charleston Naval Hospital, Charleston, S.C.
Currently, he is a senior partner with Associated Radiologists of Joliet.
In addition, over the past 40 years as a member of the Silver Cross, Rinella has served as chief of staff at Silver Cross Hospital and on many medical staff committees, including cancer and bylaws committees and the tumor board. He also served three terms as chair of the Department of Radiology.
For the past 7 years, he has represented the medical staff on Silver Cross Hospital’s Board of Directors. He served on the audit and legal affairs and quality and cost effectiveness committees.
Besides serving as a leader at Silver Cross, he has spent the last 40 years grooming Silver Cross’ next generation of physicians, including two of his 4 children – including Anthony Rinella, M.D., spine surgeon in Homer Glen, and Dan Rinella, orthotist on the Silver Cross Hospital campus.
“We are so appreciative to both Dr. Gutierrez and Dr. Rinella for their 40 years of visionary leadership to Silver Cross Hospital,” Paul Pawlak, president and CEO of Silver Cross Hospital said. “They have helped to shape Silver Cross Hospital and have led us to provide award-winning care for future generations. We will be forever grateful.”
