Morris football prepares for season's start with Maroon and White scrimmage

The Friday night lights went on for the first time this fall season at Redskins Field. It was, of course, the annual Maroon and White scrimmage that the locals hold every year on the Friday before the season’s true kickoff.

“This is what it’s about for the kids. You have the students section here and the parents get to come out and see the kids and they get to play under the lights,” Morris coach Alan Thorson said. “For us as a team, we get the benefit of having the officials here and that helps if we have things to work on. It’s also a chance for the kids to get any jitters out and to work the kinks out before the first game. It’s a fun night and, as long as nobody gets hurt, its always a good night for us.”

Morris captains Dean Meucci, Austin Laurie and Kyle Hill like the tradition.

“It’s nice to get out here and to see everyone out here supporting us. It’s nice to get out on the field before we play an actual team,” Meucci said.

“It gives us a look and feel of being out there in a real game almost,” Laurie said. “You have the crowd and we’ve never practiced under the lights yet, so you kind of get the realism of a game, too.”

Morris opens the season at home on Friday night against Minooka with an approximate 7:30 p.m. start. That’s when the lights will shine the brightest.

In the meantime ...

“This is as real as a game is going to get for us until next week,” Hill said. “Emotions are flying right now and we are going to treat it like a real game. The fans are here and we are going to show them what we can do.”
