Library making plans for Halloween fun

Poe program, ‘Purge’ movie set for October

Fans of Edgar Allan Poe or anyone who just likes a little scary fun around Halloween is invited to “The Imagination of Poe” at 1 p.m. Oct. 5 at the Morris Area Public Library.

Dan Haughey’s first-person interpretation of a modern literary critic for a prominent metropolitan newspaper will illuminate the life and work of Edgar Allan Poe.  Hear some of Poe’s greatest poems, short stories and satires as Haughey both performs them in the voice of Poe, and criticizes them in the guise of skeptical literary critic.

Works will include but may not be limited to “The Raven,” “Annabel Lee,” “The Bells,” “The Cask of Amontillado,” “The Tell-Tale Heart,” “Philosophy of Furniture” and “Diddling.”  With only minor adaptation, the audience members will become part of a “sound-effects chorus” to have fun and enhance both the humor and spell-binding experience.

This program is sponsored in part by the Illinois Humanities Council. The IHC is supported in part by the National Endowment for the Humanities and the Illinois General Assembly (through the Illinois Arts Council, a state agency), and by contributions from individuals, foundations and corporations.

This program is free and open to the public. To register, visit or call the library at 815-942-6880. The Morris Area Public Library is at 604 Liberty St., Morris.

Library offers Halloween movie night for adults

The Morris Area Public Library’s Halloween movie night for adults will be at 6 p.m. Oct. 8. The library will feature the movie, “The Purge,” starring Ethan Hawke, Lena Headey and Max Burkholder.

In an America wracked by crime and overcrowded prisons, the government has sanctioned an annual 12-hour period in which any and all criminal activity, including murder, becomes legal. The police can’t be called. Hospitals suspend help. It’s one night when residents regulate themselves without punishment.

On this night plagued by violence and an epidemic of crime, one family wrestles with the decision of who they will become when a stranger comes knocking. When an intruder breaks into James Sandin’s (Ethan Hawke) gated community during the yearly lockdown, he begins a sequence of events that threatens to tear a family apart.

This movie is rated R for strong, disturbing violence and some language. This movie is free and open to all adults age 18 and older. To register, call 815-942-6880 or visit the library. Refreshments also will be available.

The Morris Area Public Library is at 604 Liberty St., Morris.

Library to show ‘Much Ado About Nothing’

This movie is a modern retelling of Shakespeare’s classic comedy about two pairs of lovers with different takes on romance and a way with words.

This movie is rated PG-13 for some sexuality and brief drug use. Attendees must be at least age 13 to register and attend. This movie is free and open to the public. To register, call the library at 815-942-6880 or stop in. Refreshments will be available. The Morris Area Public Library is at 604 Liberty St., Morris.
