GARDNER – Grundy County Sheriff’s deputies are investigating an incident in which an adult black male approached a 14-year-old girl while she waited at a bus stop Wednesday morning in Gardner.

Sheriff Kevin Callahan said the girl was waiting for the school bus at Jackson and Dwight streets around 7:30 a.m., when a black, four-door vehicle pulled up with a black male in his mid-20s inside.

“The victim said he was mumbling to himself, approached her, and asked her age and where she lived,” Callahan said.

“She immediately went home and told her mom, who called the department.”

The man did not try to abduct the girl, Callahan said.

Sheriff’s deputies took the information and checked the area for the vehicle. During an investigation, it was discovered a similar vehicle was described as being in a different part of Gardner earlier that morning when a dispute occurred, but was not reported, the sheriff said.

The sheriff’s department is still investigating. Local schools notified parents as a precaution.
