Autumn at Starved Rock

Published: Saturday, Sept. 14, 2013 5:30 a.m. CDT

UTICA – Autumn is on the horizon and many events are on the schedule at Starved Rock Lodge near Utica.

Historical trolley tours are offered Sundays, with two departures – noon and 1:30 p.m. – for $12 a person. Guided hikes are now offered each weekend. “Take a Hike and a Lunch” departs every Saturday and Sunday at 11 a.m. and includes lunch for $17 a person.

Outdoor dining on the Veranda at the Lodge is the perfect way to begin or end a trip to Starved Rock.

The Lodge’s “Art in the Park” collection is a leisurely way to explore the Lodge grounds and see these creative woodcarvings, bronze sculptures and more. Free, self-guided maps allow guests to see the collection at their own pace, even via wheelchair or stroller.

As October approaches, fall colors trolley tours are added to the calendar. This popular tour allows guests to experience a historical interpretation of the Starved Rock area, while seeing the colorful paint box of color as they hike into Council Overhang and Ottawa Canyon.

Oktoberfest dinners will take place in the Great Hall of the Lodge on two weekends this year – Oct. 12 to 13 and Oct. 19 to 20. The German food, beer and music under the log beams of the historical Lodge create an ambiance that beckons bygone days. Sounds of the New Doodledorfers German Band fill the air and add to the fun.

The La Salle County Historical Society’s annual Burgoo Festival will take place in Utica on Oct. 13. Fall Colors Weekend is set for Oct. 19 and 20, but fall colors last longer than one weekend, of course. Just outside the Great Hall, fireside stories will take place every Saturday night at Fox Ridge.

The Starved Rock Photography Club is open to photographers of all skill levels. The fall outing is planned for 9 a.m. Oct. 26. To join the fun, call 815-220-7354.

The Lodge’s Tribute to the Stars performances continue in the fall with tributes to Elvis Presley on Oct. 1 and Neil Diamond on Oct. 21 and 22. All shows include a lunch or dinner buffet. Matinees are $32 and dinner shows are $37.

Christmas Shows and the 2014 performance calendar is now available. For more information on Lodge events, call 815-667-4211 or go to
