Nancy Jo Norman

Mrs. Nancy Jo Norman, 82, passed away peacefully, with her family by her side, Monday, Sept. 2, 2013, at Morris Hospital.

Born on Feb. 2, 1931, in Morris, she was the daughter of the late Thomas and Frances (Nelson) Clayton. She attended Morris Grade School and graduated from Morris High School in 1949.

Following high school, Nancy worked as a telephone operator for Illinois Bell. She also worked as a dental assistant for Dr. F. Wayne Graham for several years.

Nancy served as Morris’ first woman alderman, sitting on the Morris City Council from May 1987 to April 1989.

She was a member of the Morris Woman’s Club for many years, serving as president from 1984 to 1986, and again from 2008 to 2010.

Nancy was an avid reader, especially of historical literature, played bridge and enjoyed monthly lunches with a special group of friends from her high school class, “The ’49s.”

Surviving are her two children, Janis Coop of Mountain View, Calif., and Bill (Jody) Norman of Cornell, Ill.; five grandchildren, Emily and Amy Coop, Sarah (Jason) Ledford, and Matthew and Andrew Norman; and two great-grandchildren, Trenton and Tanner Norman. She is also survived by two sisters, Cheryl (Sig) Storz of Camarillo, Calif., and Beth (Gerry) Carlson of Morris.

She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Tommy Clayton.

The family will receive friends on Saturday, Sept. 21, from 10 a.m. until the time of the memorial service at 11 a.m. at the U.C. Davis-Callahan Funeral Home, 301 W. Washington St., Morris. Pastor Steve Larson will officiate.

Cremation rites have been accorded. Private inurnment will be held at Evergreen Cemetery.
