CREST HILL, Ill. – According to a recent article, American consumers owe $11.3 trillion in debt. More specifically, U.S. household consumers on average owe $15,185 in credit card debt, $147,133 in mortgage debt, and $31,509 in student loans.

Do you know how much you owe? Have you figured your own “safe” credit limit? Do you know what percentage of your total credit limit is safe to change? Do you know the warning signs that you have too much debt?

NuMark Credit Union wants to help you control and take positive steps to manage your debt. NuMark is offering a free seminar, “Power Over Debt: Break the Debt Cycle” from to 8 p.m. Oct. 22 at NuMark’s Crest Hill office, 2380 Caton Farm Road, and on Oct. 24 at its Tinley Park office, 8001 W. 159th St.

At the seminar, participants will learn about the different kinds of debt, benefits and costs of credit, warning signs of too much debt, how to retrieve their credit report, how to tackle debt, how to rebuild bad credit, and how to stay out of debt.

“Having a lot of debt can be overwhelming but the key is to work on one debt at a time,” says Linda Krakora, training and development manager. “By educating yourself and changing habits, you can really eliminate substantial debt in the long run.”

This seminar is free and open to the public.

Participants are encouraged to bring their friends and family members. Seating is limited.
