Woman sues LaSalle County over jail strip search

OTTAWA – A Coal City woman this week filed a federal lawsuit against the LaSalle County Sheriff’s Department claiming she was stripped and thrown into a cell that had a video camera.

Donna Holmes, 33, was arrested in July on charges of drunken driving, speeding and illegal transportation of alcohol in her car. Her lawsuit alleges three male deputies and a female deputy stripped her in the jail in Ottawa even though she already had been checked for weapons or illegal substances.

They then put her in a padded cell and eventually threw a blanket into the cell, she alleged.

The lawsuit, which was filed Monday, alleges having male deputies present during the strip search was a violation of state law.

A sheriff’s report said she had become combative during the arrest.

Sheriff Tom Templeton and county lawyers had no comment because this is an ongoing lawsuit.

Holmes has since pleaded guilty to driving under the influence of alcohol.
