Flu shots available in Morris area

Morris Hospital is offering $30 flu shots at its Braidwood, Channahon, Dwight, Gardner, Marseilles, Minooka and Newark Healthcare Centers. Flu shots are available during office hours. No appointment is required.

A higher dose flu vaccine is available for $50 for individuals age 65 and older. Individuals in this age group are more susceptible to getting the flu.

Flu, or influenza, is a serious contagious disease that causes an average 36,000 deaths in the United States each year. According to the Centers for Disease Control, an annual flu vaccine is the best way to reduce the chances of getting the flu. The CDC recommends getting vaccinated before December.

Since everyone is at risk for seasonal influenza, the CDC now recommends that everyone 6 months of age and older get vaccinated.

Certain people should not be vaccinated before talking to their doctor.

This includes pregnant women; especially children younger than age 2; people 50 years of age and older, people with certain chronic medical conditions; people who live in nursing homes and other long-term care facilities; people who live with or care for those at high risk for complications from flu, including healthcare workers, household contacts of persons at high risk for complications from the flu, and household contacts and out of home caregivers of children less than 6 months of age.

Certain people should not be vaccinated before talking to their doctor. This includes people who have a severe allergy to chicken eggs, people who have had a severe reaction to an influenza vaccination in the past, and people who developed Guillian-Barre syndrome within 6 weeks of getting an influenza vaccine previously. The influenza vaccine is not approved for use in children younger than 6 months.
