Ruth Ann Backhus, 79, peacefully passed away Monday, Oct. 21, in her sleep at her home in Scottsdale, Ariz.
Ruth Ann Beyer was born March 26, 1934, in Chicago, to Frank Beyer and Marjorie Woolsey Beyer. On Sept. 26, 1953, Ruth married the love of her life, Charles H. “Charlie” Backhus, who survives. Ruth had known Charles since she was just a girl – his mother was her Girl Scout leader. Following Charlie’s retirement, they moved to Arizona from Dixon, Ill., in 1994. Before that they lived in Morris, Ill., from 1969 until 1979. Ruth enjoyed traveling, quilting, reading, playing cards, going to her Monday morning Bible study group and meeting with friends at Paradise Valley Mall on Tuesdays and Thursdays. She was also a devoted, although disappointed, Chicago Cubs fan.
Ruth also is survived by her children, Susan (Thomas) Sokolinski of Aurora, Ill., Kathy (John Sr.) Maddox of Morris and Mark Backhus of Morris. Ruth was the cherished Grandma to Lauren (Jiho) Park, Carl Sokolinski, Catherine (Danny) Kien, John (Stephanie) Maddox Jr., Kevin Maddox, Michael and Jeffrey Backhus; and loving Great-Grandma to Lillian and Owen Park, Kade and Kaylee Maddox, and Kailynn, Brandon and Tristan Backhus. Ruth also leaves behind her sisters, Peg and Margie; special sister-in-law, Gini; many nieces and nephews; countless friends; and her wonderful church family at Resurrection Lutheran Church in Scottsdale.
Ruth will be remembered for her strong faith in the Lord, her loving friendships and especially for being a wonderful wife, mom, grandma and great-grandma. She will live forever in their hearts. A memorial service to celebrate Ruth’s life was held Thursday, Oct. 24. More than 200 people came to honor Ruth and share happy memories.
At Ruth’s request, please direct memorials to the Resurrection Lutheran Church Endowment Fund, 4930 E. Greenway Road, Scottsdale, AZ 85254, or St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
