BRIEF: Food stamp cuts kick in Friday

SPRINGFIELD (MCT) — Participants in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP, formerly called food stamps) will experience a reduction in benefits, beginning Friday, with expiration of a temporary increase put in place by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act during the recession in 2009.

Recipients may get their benefit amount by calling the number on the back of their Illinois Link card or the Illinois Department of Human Services automated helpline at 800-843-6154.

The benefit amount of eligible households depends on several factors, including income, household size and expenses. For example, a single person with no change in circumstances will experiences a decrease in monthly benefits of $11; a couple, $20; a family of three, $29; and a family of four, $36.

In Illinois, more than 2 million people participate in the SNAP program.
