Penny Wade from Manhattan, and Caleb Hobbick from Morris, take part in last year's local packing event to benefit Operation Christmas Child.

MORRIS – On Saturday, the Christian Youth Center of Morris is partnering with Shoebox 1k with a goal of packing 1,000 shoeboxes for Operation Christmas Child.

Operation Christmas Child sends gift-filled shoeboxes along with the good news of God’s love to children all over the world. Shoeboxes are filled with small toys, personal care items, school supplies, a stuffed animal, candy and a personal note from the packer, and then sent to Operation Christmas Child. OCC then distributes them all over the world.

Last year, the group packed 1,251 shoeboxes, according to a news release from event organizers. Numerous fundraisers, collection events and supply drives have been leading up to Saturday’s event.

Shoebox packing will occur from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday at the youth center, 508 W. Illinois Ave., Morris. There is limited space available for those interested in taking part; contact coordinator Betsy Burnett at 815-325-9926 for information.
