Police capture escaped prisoner after intensive four-hour manhunt

DECATUR (MCT) — After a four-hour manhunt that involved massive police resources, a 25-year-old man who escaped from the Macon County Jail early Wednesday afternoon was recaptured and returned to jail.

Schuyler C. McCoy escaped at about 1:30 p.m. Wednesday after telling correctional officers he was a different inmate, one who was in the process of being released on bond.

As soon as officers realized the error, the manhunt began.

"We brought in all of our resources, the entire detective bureau, every administrator and every deputy," said Macon County Sheriff Tom Schneider, adding that the U.S. Marshals and Decatur police were also involved in the effort. Also assisting were the Sullivan Police Department and Moultrie County Sheriff's Office.

McCoy, who had been in jail for about two months on charges including aggravated battery/great bodily harm, was sentenced to three years in prison on Friday as part of a plea deal.

He was about to be transferred to the Department of Corrections when he escaped.

New charges of escape and parole violation are expected to be filed against McCoy. He was on parole in connection with a 2011 conviction for fleeing police at a rate of more than 21 mph at the time of his arrest on his most recent charges.
