Therapy center teams up with We Care for clothing drive

DIAMOND – To give back to the community this holiday season, Diamond Therapy Center is teaming up with We Care of Grundy County to hold We Care’s first clothing drive.

During the Christmas season, toy drives are popular to ensure every child receives a gift from Santa, said Robyn Cox, massage therapist at Diamond Therapy Center. But new clothing for children is also a Christmas staple, especially for teenagers.

“We wanted to do something that’s really going to benefit,” she said.

By having a clothing drive at the office, the business is able to involve patients, too, Cox said.

We Care provides emergency food, rent, utility and prescription assistance to those in need in Grundy County. Diamond Therapy Center treats pain through chiropractic care, physical therapy, massage therapy, nutritional counseling and medical physician referrals.

We Care Executive Director Denise Gaska said Cox contacted her to ask how the business could help, and they brainstormed a clothing drive.

We Care annually does an adopt-a-family program where local residents, organizations and businesses provide gifts and a holiday meal for We Care families. But every year there are some families who apply too late for the program, or do not qualify, but still need assistance.

We Care tries to provide gifts for these families through its office with donations, Gaska said. We Care uses toys donated from local stores and the Toys for Tots program to allow these families to get gifts for their children.

“There is not a huge amount of families [who do this], but we thought for those few, items of clothing would help,” she said.

The clothing needs to be new and donations of socks, undergarments, shirts, shoes, pants, coats, gloves and hats are requested. Sizes are needed from infant to adult.

Last year We Care provided 332 families with 754 children with gifts and a holiday dinner.

Applications are being accepted now for families in need who would like to be adopted this Christmas.
