Modest J. ‘Peggy’ Sjostrom

Modest J. “Peggy” Sjostrom, 82, of Morris, passed away Thursday morning, Nov. 7, 2013, at Edward Hines VA Hospital.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 13, at Fruland Funeral Home, 121 W. Jefferson St., in Morris, Ill., with the Rev. Deb Percell officiating. Private interment will be at a later date in Saratoga Cemetery. The visitation will be Wednesday at the funeral home from 9:30 a.m. until time of service. Military honors will be provided by the Morris Color Guard at the funeral home.

Born Jan. 31, 1931, in Madisonville, Ky., she was the daughter of Roy and Susan (Ivey) VanVactor. She graduated from Nebo High School in Nebo, Ky., with the Class of 1949.  She married Carl Sjostrom on Feb. 20, 1960, in Morris, where they lived all of their married life.

Peggy served as a sergeant in the U.S. Army. She was employed at Joliet Arsenal in Elwood, Bi-Rite Grocery Store and Park N Wash dry cleaners, both in Morris. For several years she drove the VA bus for Grundy County to Hines Hospital.

Survivors include her children, Andrew (Jean) Sjostrom of Morris and Joseph (Cindy) Sjostrom of Morris; four grandchildren, James Arellano of Morris, Robert (Kathy) Arellano of Seneca, Ill., Richard (Megan) Arellano of Morris and Jennie (Jesse) Vidales of Morris; seven great-grandchildren, Kiarra, Morgan, Brandyn, Elaina, Lily, Dominic and Marcus; one brother, Roy (Exie) VanVactor of Kentucky; special niece, Missy Kline Jones of Rockingham. N.C.; and very special great-niece, Amy.

Preceding her in death were her parents; her husband, Carl, on Jan. 5, 1992; and one sister, Elizabeth Kline.

She was a member of the First United Methodist Church, John Martin Steele Post 6049 and American Legion Post 294.

Peggy was an avid Chicago sports fan, Kentucky college sports and women pro basketball and softball.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the family.
