PONTIAC (MCT) - Residents of Central Illinois are paying their respects to fallen Pontiac police Officer Casey Kohlmeier and his K-9 partner, Draco, by lighting their doorsteps using blue bulbs.

"We had over 100 and they quickly sold out," said Pontiac Officer Kristina Hull. "We have ordered more, but we don't know when they will be in."

Kohlmeier and Draco were killed in the line of duty on Oct. 30 during a two-car accident on Interstate 55 near Pontiac. According to his obituary, he had family in Grundy County.

A South Carolina man, Jason Collins, was charged with reckless homicide and aggravated driving under the influence of alcohol in connection with the crash. He remains in Livingston County jail in lieu of posting $100,000.

Proceeds from the bulbs, sold at the Pontiac police station, will benefit the Livingston County Boys and Girls Club, where Kohlmeier was a board member. The department is encouraging donations of $5.

The department is asking residents with blue bulbs to shine them through the month of November.

Collins is due in court on Nov. 25 for a preliminary hearing. Livingston County Circuit Judge Jennifer Bauknecht heard his initial court appearance, but Collins has filed a preliminary motion for a reassignment of the judge.
