George E. Harrop

George E. Harrop, 92, of Gardner, Ill., passed away Sunday, Nov. 10, 2013, at his home.

He was born Nov. 28, 1920, in Cherry, Ill., to the late George and Anna (nee Wishnevsky) Harrop. He graduated from Gardner-South Wilmington High School with the Class of 1938. He married Lydia Lucca on March 2, 1946, in Braidwood, Ill. They lived their entire married life in Gardner. 

George served during WWII as an Army Staff Sergeant Combat Engineer from Aug. 20, 1942 to Nov. 12, 1945. George was part of the D-Day Normandy invasion landing on Omaha Beach in the second wave. He enjoyed fishing and gardening. George was an avid Chicago Cubs and Bears fan and enjoyed watching the games, and a retired member of the Carpenters Local 174.

He is survived by his son, George (Patti Whitney) Harrop; his daughter, Joan Harrop; his sister, Geraldine Brown; and numerous nieces and nephews. 

He was preceded in death by his wife, Lydia Harrop, on Feb. 8, 1992; his parents; and his sister, Betty Pomatto.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 14, at the R.W. Patterson Funeral Homes, Ltd. & Crematory, Braidwood Chapel. Interment with military honors will be in Braceville-Gardner Cemetery, Braceville, Ill. The visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 13.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in his name to the Grundy Community Volunteer Hospice, Community Nutrition Network- Meals on Wheels, or the Gardner Emergency Squad would be appreciated.
