Human services will replace SNAP benefits

The Illinois Department of Human Services is issuing replacement Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program benefits for food that was destroyed in Sunday’s tornadoes.

Active SNAP recipients who lost food purchased with SNAP benefits because of the tornado or experienced subsequent power outages lasting more than four hours have until 5 p.m. Wednesday to request replacement, according to a news release from IDHS.

The should visit the local IDHS Family and Community Resource Center.

Office locations can be found at www.dhs.state.il.us or by calling the 800-843-6154.

SNAP benefits can be used to buy food for human consumption, but cannot be used to buy alcoholic drinks, tobacco products or nonfood products.
