Melissa Wasko, counselor for the Grundy County Health Department, was recognized last month as one of the health department's Employees of the Month for December.

MORRIS – For December, the Grundy County Health Department had two employees of the month.

At the Dec. 4 monthly staff meeting, Philip Jass, administrator of the Grundy County Health Department, announced Melissa Wasko and John Moss as the recognized employees, according to a news release from the health department.

Wasko and Moss both work in the Division of Mental Health and Substance Abuse. Both were recognized for the willingness to counsel and meet with victims of the November tornado in Diamond at the Coal City United Methodist Church, after their shifts at the health department had ended for the day.

Wasko is a part-time 60-plus counselor at the health department. Primarily working with seniors, she meets with clients for one on one counseling either at the client’s home or in her office, and she facilitates several groups geared toward seniors, such as senior depression and caged by clutter.

Wasko recently presented at a forum on hoarding at the Morris Fire Protection and Ambulance District Station 2, which was hosted by the Behavioral Alliance of Grundy County. Her kind and caring demeanor, her dedication to the seniors she serves and her willingness to help wherever needed make Wasko a natural employee of the month, according to the news release.

Moss is a full-time counselor and works with MISA (mental illness/substance abuse) clients, children and adolescents, substance users and people with mental illness.

He facilitates several groups: anger management, orientation groups, stress management and substance abuse, as well as providing individual counseling. He is a mental health first aid trainer and also counsels the homeless at the PADS shelters.

Moss’ community intervention skills, his natural leadership skills and willingness to jump in wherever needed have earned him employee of the month, according to the release.

The Grundy County Health Department offers services to Grundy County residents in a variety of ways. For information on any of these programs, contact the Grundy County Health Department at 815-941-3404.
