Grade school roundup: Saratoga seventh-graders win IVC tourney

The Saratoga Hawks captured the Illinois Valley Conference championship Saturday with a 34-33 double-overtime win over MVK.

Jacob Overbeck scored a game-high 25 points for the Hawks, but it was Patrick McCabe’s two free throws with a little less than four seconds left in the game that sealed the deal.

For the Mavericks, Issac Brockman led the way with 15 points and 11 rebounds.

In the semifinals, Saratoga beat Elwood, 23-19, with Overbeck scoring 14 points and McCabe netting nine. For MVK in the semifinals, the Mavericks beat Gardner, 37-23, with Brockman getting 12 points and Sam Grushkin had 11.

In another semifinal game, Reed-Custer defeated Coal City, 36-34, with Keegan Gagliardo scoring 14 points for the Warriors. Preston Johnson added six points.

The Braves defeated the Warriors for third place in the IVC Tournament.

Nathan Wantland led Shabbona with 11 points while Aurellios Lennon-Rios added eight. Blake breyman and Caleb Hefford had six points each.


Saratoga def. Coal City,

25-9, 25-22

Hannah Best had nine points for the Warriors in the loss. Bridget Kauzlaric had five assists.
