MORRIS – The Morris Theatre Guild Inc. has begun rehearsals and is taking reservations for its winter romantic comedy production of Jerry Mayer’s “2 Across.”
This show replaces the originally scheduled musical “Working,” because of unforeseen circumstances, the guild is unable to present that show.
The story is about two strangers, an adult man and an adult woman who board a Chicago CTA train at 4:30 a.m. They are alone in the car, each is married, and both are doing the New York Times crossword.
She is an organized, sensible psychologist. He is a free spirited, unemployed ad executive. She is a crossword pro. He always quits. When he tosses his puzzle away, she snaps, “Crosswords are a metaphor for life. Those who finish, succeed; those who don’t, fail.”
Now he vows to finish. Why? He is a competitor and she happens to be lovely. This is an 80-minute show.
Two opposites are in an enclosed space, attacking each other’s values, but also being swayed and intrigued by them. They each have serious life problems that the other helps them solve. Their trip is filled with unpredictable but believable surprises, even a passionate kissing embrace or two. As the train ride ends, it is obvious each of them has been changed for the better and we are all dying to know if these two will meet again.
The cast consists of veteran guild members, including Anna Ficht-Kowalcyzk and Mathew Root, both of Morris. The production is directed by Judy Miller of Morris and assisted by Randy Lowery of Verona. The show opens Feb. 14 and the production continues on Feb. 15, 16, 21, 22, and closes Feb. 23. All Friday and Saturday evening performances will begin at 7:30 p.m., and both Sunday matinee performances will begin at 2:30 p.m.
Ticket prices for adults are $12 each if reserved by email, phone or purchased online, and $15 if purchased at the door.
