MAZON – A Mazon man was killed Saturday morning in an accident on Route 47.
Arvid M. Johnson, 75, was taken to Morris Hospital where he was pronounced
dead just before 11 a.m., according to a news release from Grundy County Coroner John Callahan’s office.
The accident occurred about 8:45 a.m., said Grundy County Sheriff Kevin Callahan on Monday. Johnson was driving his pickup truck north on Route 47 just north of Mazon when, for an unknown reason, his vehicle left his lane and went into the southbound lane.
When he entered the south lane, another pickup truck noticed Johnson coming into the lane and veered into the ditch to try and avoid Johnson. The vehicles collided in the ditch and the second pickup truck ended up on its side.
The passenger of the second pickup had to be extricated and was taken to Morris Hospital with injuries that weren’t life threatening, Callahan said.
An autopsy showed that Johnson died of multiple blunt force injuries, said Chief Deputy Coroner Christina Hintze-Symoniak on Monday. She said the reason why his vehicle went off the road remains unknown.
“The roads were not that bad at that time,” Callahan said. “There were no road closures then.”
The Grundy County Coroner’s Office is investigating the incident with the Grundy County Sheriff’s Office.
Mazon, Morris and Dwight emergency responders were on scene with the sheriff’s office.
Johnson’s visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Reeves Funeral Home, 408 E. Washington St. in Morris. Funeral services will follow at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, 600 E. Jackson St. in Morris.
