Prep roundup: Morris basketball team in first place in conference

The Morris boys basketball team beat Rochelle, 59-47, on Friday in Rochelle. Sycamore and the Redskins are tied atop the Northern Illinois Big 12 East standings with a 4-1 record after a loss by the Spartans against DeKalb.

“It has been tough to keep the team’s focus on Rochelle … they have been anticipating the Sycamore game for some time,” Morris coach Joe Blumberg said. “But if we had laid and egg in Rochelle, the Sycamore game doesn’t mean as much.”

Austin Patterson had 23 points to lead the Redskins while Evan Bjelland had 10 and Tanner Sampson had nine.

“We warned the guys that Rochelle was much improved and they are tough to beat at home,” Blumberg said. “They were scrappy and outplayed us in the first half. Patty and Evan hit some big threes in the third to give us the lead. It was not our most crisp and well-played game, but after two weeks off, a win is a win.”

Morris is now 13-3 overall.
