Lady Mavericks in the West, Lady Warriors in the East

The Mazon-Verona-Kinsman Lady Mavericks eighth-grade girls volleyball team finished third Saturday at the Illinois Valley Conference West Tournament, knocking off Elwood in two games, 25-16, 25-18. In the East Division, Coal City defeated Wilmington, 25-15, 25-17.

Leading Mavericks in the West clash was: Alex Draves with 12 points, four kills and two blocks; Alexa Novy with nine points and five digs; Alyssa Hauch with seven kills and a block; and Alyssa Gilbertson five digs.

Earlier the Mavericks had defeated Dwight, 25-18, 1-25, 25-19, with Brittany Helms and Sydney Poyner scoring 11 points each in the first game.

Also out West, Seneca beat Saratoga, 25-16, 16-25, 25-17, despite two aces and four kills from Saratoga’s Ashley Hood; two aces, three kills and a block by Marissa Aguilar; and two kills and two blocks from Gracie Wargo.

Leading the Warriors in the East meeting was: Megan Lacy with seven points, while Leslie Yousktvch added six points and two aces. Jessie Winslow also contributed five points and one ace.

Earlier Coal City beat Reed-Custer, 25-11, 25-16, behind nine points and five aces from Sadey Brewer. Winslow added seven points and nine assists.

Minooka knocked the Warriors out of the winners bracket with a 25-9, 25-13 win over Coal City despite five points and one ace from Kauzlaric.


Minooka wins IVC East championship

The Indians defeated Coal City by 30 points to capture the league title.

Michael Carey, Nick Daniel, Alec Dufor, John Nowak, drew Gold and Derek Wentworth were champions for Minooka.
