Prep roundup: Seven area wrestlers still alive at state

CHAMPAIGN – At press time, semifinal winners at the IHSA state wrestling finals for the MDH area include: Cody Minnick of Coal City, Corey Jurzak of Coal City, Casey Brown of Coal City and Kenny Baldridge of Morris; but Tommy Lovett of Seneca lost.

Baldridge at 132, Lovett at 182 pounds, Minnick at 113, Corey Jurzak at 126 and Brown at 132 all won their quarterfinal bouts.

On Friday, Baldridge defeated Patrick Schoenfelder of Antioch by a 16-4 major decision; Lovett beat Nick Berty of Robinson 12-5; Minnick defeated Dylan Carey of Normal University by an 11-1 major decision; Jurzak beat Darren Stephens of Peoria Notre Dame 5-2 and Brown knocked off Kyle Kalkenbrenner of Lena Winslow by technical fall 15-0.

Seneca 126 pounder Sage Friese and Morris 160 pounder Trevor Allbert are still alive after quarterfinal losses.

Friese lost to Garrett Brachbill of Shelbyville, 8-3, before rebounding in the wrestlebacks to defeat Luke Roach of Illini Bluffs by fall in :58. Allbert lost in the 2A quarters to Cole Witzig of Troy Triad, 6-3, but rebounded in the wrestlebacks by defeating Matthew Wheeler of Harvard by fall in 3:36.

Also wrestling Friday was Coal City 106-pounder Joey Rivera.

He lost, 12-6, in the quarterfinals to Zach Schrank of Rockford Lutheran and he was then eliminated by Trevor Bullington of LeRoy, 15-4.

On Thursday four area wrestlers lost and were unable to wrestleback. Minooka’s 113-pounder K.J. Minor lost to Nick Lukanich of Marist 11-6; Minooka’s 152-pounder Carson Oughton lost to Matt Rowland of Willowbrook 5-0 and Minooka’s 220-pounder Erik Velazquez lost to Lucas Warren of Marmion Academy by fall in :28. Also, Coal City 170-pounder Riley Kauzlaric lost to Jarod Noel of Bismarck-Henning, 8-7.


Minooka advances to final round of state bowling

The Minooka girls bowling team finished in fifth place on the first day of the IHSA State Bowling Tournament on Friday, meaning the team makes the cut to the second day of the competition held today at Cherry Bowl in Rockford.

The Indians finished the first day with 5,947 pins. Minooka senior Emmly Koulis leads the Indians with 1,246 pins and sits in 33rd place.

Waubonsie Valley leads the field with a score of 6,422 with the top 12 teams advancing to today’s action.

Morris junior Jessica Winter finished in 115th place with a total of 1,056 pins.
