Early voters heading to polls, avoiding lines

MORRIS – Voters have begun trickling into the polls to cast their ballots for the March 18 primary.

“It’s steady. There are no lines,” Grundy County Clerk Lana Phillips said. “That’s the beauty of early voting.”

Voter registration ended Feb. 18, but early voting began Monday.

Since starting Monday, 87 voters have cast their ballots in Grundy County, and another 85 people voted either by mail or in person between Feb. 6 and 28 during the absentee voting period.

Seven took advantage of grace-period voting, according to county clerk data.

About 29,800 voters in Grundy County are registered to vote for this election, a decrease compared to the February 2010 primary, during which 31,000 voters were registered.

Just 6,900 – or 22 percent – of people voted in the 2010 primary.

In-person absentee and early voting is located at the Grundy County Courthouse, from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday unless otherwise noted on the county clerk’s website.

A valid photo ID is required at the time of early voting, but a reason to vote early is not required.

Grace-period voting, which runs through March 15, allows unregistered voters to cast their ballots. Unregistered voters, however, must register in person, vote at the same time, and present two forms of identification, one of which must include a current address.

Residents unsure of their registration status can visit www.grundyco.org.
