Miller waits for OK from county board

MORRIS – Heidi Miller could be Grundy County’s newest full-time administrator by next Tuesday, if the county board approves her promotion from interim administrator.

Miller was appointed to interim administrator in October 2013 after Chris Wittkamp left the position suddenly in September. Wittkamp had been administrator for five months.

The county’s last full-time administrator was Shawn Hamilton, who left the position for a better opportunity with the city of Park Ridge in July 2012. Before Hamilton, Dan Duffy held the position for several years until he left to become the village of Minooka’s village administrator.

Miller said she would be excited to make the transition to full-time administrator.

“Once they decide, it will just be nice to know that I can go full steam ahead,” Miller said. “There’s so much that could be done.”

The Grundy County Personnel Committee held a special meeting last week to write a recommendation in favor of promoting Miller.

“We had a lot of people fill out questionnaires on how they thought she was doing,” committee chairwoman Vicki Geiger said Tuesday. “We found they were overwhelmingly positive.”

Geiger said the committee has been impressed with Miller’s work since she took on administrative duties.

“She’s a hard worker and she’s ready to learn,” Geiger said. “People with those two attributes are usually in pretty good shape.”

Before coming to Grundy, Miller – a Coal City resident – received her degree in mechanical engineering and worked for a private company before taking a job in planning and zoning for the village of Shorewood and later for Minooka.

Eight years ago, Miller was hired by the county to be their full-time land use director, a position she still holds today.

“We need her full time because she’s actually handling land use right now as well,” county board chairman Ron Severson said Wednesday. “She’s really doing two jobs right now.”

For the time being, Miller would continue as the land use planner if she was promoted to administrator.

She said the county will most likely hire a building and zoning officer to take over several of her duties as land use director. Miller’s land use assistant Cheryl Wardell also will help run the land use department as she currently does.

Miller said if awarded the position, she will push for more cooperation between the county and the municipalities.

“It’s working with a lot of the municipalities and starting to hit some cooperation in the sense of cooperative projects together,” she said.

The county board is scheduled to vote on the recommended promotion at the next county board meeting Tuesday.
