MORRIS — It is coming off arguably the best season in school history. The Morris soccer team is officially underway on Saturday, brimming with optimism that accompanies confidence about the coming spring.
Last year the locals won a regional for the first time on the girls side. Though the Redskins finished slightly under .500 at 8-9-2 last year and did not set an MCHS record for wins (10) in a season, those are concievable goals for a team returning most of its starters this time around.
This week the MDH caught up with senior starter Ashlee Tapia and she agreed to be the subject of this week's question & answer session. This is how it went.
Q. So, after winning a regional last year it would seem that this year's team is pretty excited to get going. Do you see it that way?
A. Yes, all the girls seem pumped to go win regionals and continue our year longer than last year.
Q. I know that the team has a lot of returning players and starters from a year ago. How much have you guys gotten the chance to work together since last spring?
A. A lot of us have been playing together so our team has gotten even more comfortable with each other.
Q. How much does having played together with the same players help the team?
A. Our communication and trust in each other has grown which I know will really help us on the field. It helps a lot.
Q. Other than last year, how long has the core group of girls been playing soccer together?
A. The seniors have been playing with each other since MSA and almost the whole team has played together for a few winters/falls.
Q. Last year was coach Porter's first season as head coach. How has things evolved in terms of learning her philosophies about the way the game should be played?
A. Coach Porter has really helped our team by motivating us and pushing us to do our best in practices and during games.
Q. Speaking of that, if you were to try and describe the style of the team to someone that has never seen you before, what would you tell them?
A. I would say that we are a family. We have worked hard together and laughed together. We each know our role and what we have to do to win.
Q. Have you guys set goals for the season? Like ending with a certain number of wins, winning conference, winning a regional. Things like that?
A. We are hoping to win regionals and go to sectionals and dominate.
Q. What is it going to take in order for this team to help the program take the next step up?
A. Every girl on the field trying their hardest and playing the game that we each love.
Q. Anything else you'd like people to know about this team?
A. I believe that each girl on this team has the skills to help the team win.
