Coal City stomps Sandwich behind offensive surge

The Coal City baseball team picked up another Interstate Eight Conference win on Wednesday, knocking off Sandwich, 13-2.

Brad Littleton was the winning pitcher for the Coalers. He went five innings, allowing two earned runs on three hits while walking seven and striking out five. He is now 4-1 on the season. Zack Mellon finished up by pitching a scoreless sixth.

At the plate, Lane Cowherd, Littleton, D.J. Budde and Dillon Siejka had two hits each. One of Littleton’s hits was a two-run homer in the sixth. Alex Wills scored three runs.

GSW 10, Tri-Point 1: Blake Marks was the winning pitcher, as he struck out 13 batters in moving to 2-1 on the season. He allowed one hit in getting the complete game performance.

Wilkey had two hits to lead the GSW offense.

Herscher 13, Dwight 1: Karsen Kopmann hit a home run to account for the lone run by the Trojans.

Chris Peck was the losing pitcher, and Chance Carlson finished in relief.


Coal City 11, Sandwich 1: Emily Aichele was the winning pitcher for the Coalers while going 2 for 3 at the plate with two triples and two RBIs. In the circle, Aichele allowed three hits and one earned run while striking out six.

Also for Coal City, Taylor Meents was 2 for 3 with an RBI. Makenna Emerson was 2 for 3 with a double and two RBIs. Abby Olsen homered, and Mady Bunton was 2 for 3 with a home run, double and four RBIs.

GSW 22, Tri-Point 0: GSW belted out 20 hits, and pitcher Emily Foley allowed two hits in the win.

At the plate, Lexi Posing was 3 for 4 with four runs scored, a three-run homer and three RBI. Sophie Barna was 2 for 5 with a triple, two runs scored and four RBIs. Makayla Residori was 2 for 5 with two doubles, two runs scored and two RBIs. Maranda Residori was 3 for 5 with a double. Julie Chambers had a double and two runs scored. Kylie King also had two hits and two runs scored.

Westmont 8, Seneca 3: Rachel Sangston had two hits for the Irish, including a home run, while Jenni Nugent also had two hits and a home run,

Sangston was the losing pitcher.


Morris 7,

Yorkville 4

Taylor Waters was the winning pitcher, getting the complete-game performance for the Redskins.

At the plate, Jasmine Cook, Amanda Jenkins, Janelle Brehm, Ryan Friend and Brista Johnson had hits. Jenkins’ hit was a triple, and Brehm, Friend and Johnson had doubles.

Rochelle 1

Sophmore Ryan Asherman stepping in as the No. 1 singles  player was defeated in two sets, 3-6, 0-6, but the rest was all positive for the Redskins in the Northern Illinois Big 12 contest.

At No. 2 singles, Jon Smyk defeated Rochelle’s Kalvin Parker in two sets, 6-2, 6-2. At No. 1 doubles, the team of Mark Kijowski and Tommy Ochoa won, 6-3, 6-4. At No. 2 doubles, the team of Matt Borgstrom and Chris Chaidez won, 6-2, 6-2. The No. 3 doubles team of Trevor Allbert and David Carlos won, 6-2, 6-2.
