Dresden Station Unit 2 operating at full power

MORRIS – Operators at Dresden Generating Station returned Unit 2 to full power Tuesday following the replacement of the unit’s main power transformer, which was damaged by an electrical transient on April 12.  The transformer, which is on the non-nuclear side of the plant, could not be replaced while the unit was operating. The main power transformer increases voltage produced in the plant and places it on the electrical grid.

The shutdown did not affect electrical service to customers.

Dresden Generating Station’s two nuclear energy units can produce a total of more than 1,800 megawatts at full power – enough carbon free electricity to power more than 1.2 million typical homes. Dresden Unit 1, which began commercial operation in 1960 and was retired in 1978, has been designated a Nuclear Historic Landmark by the American Nuclear Society.
