Library programs to highlight gardens, water

MINOOKA – Using native plants to add beauty and to help use water more efficiently around your garden and home will be the focus of two programs coming up in May in Minooka and Plano.
“Rain Gardens: Beauty and Water Management for Your Home and Yard” will be presented at 6 p.m. May 13 at the Minooka Library, as well as in Plano at 6:30 p.m. Monday, at the Plano Library. The programs will be provided by The Conservation Foundation in cooperation with the libraries. Speakers will include Jim Kleinwachter and John Church from The Conservation Foundation.
Part of the Minooka program will include information regarding a rain garden project planned for the Aux Sable Elementary School in Minooka, sponsored by the school, LyondellBassell and The Conservation Foundation.
Rain gardens add beauty and help attract wildlife, such as butterflies, to your yard, but one of their main functions is to help increase water infiltration into the soil instead of running off the surface. Rain gardens are not water features or small ponds and should not hold water, but are sites meant to enhance water moving from the surface into the soil.
To register for the programs, contact either library, or for information, contact The Conservation Foundation, at 630-553-0687, ext. 204, or email jchurch@theconservationfoundation.org.
