Coal City United Methodist Women to host domestic violence program

COAL CITY – The community is invited to attend a special informative program on domestic violence being held at Coal City United Methodist Church, 6805 E. McArdle Road in Coal City, at 7 p.m. June 10.

The program is sponsored by the Coal City United Methodist Women and will feature guest speakers Grundy County State’s Attorney Jason Helland and Grundy County Services Coordinator for the Groundwork Domestic Violence Program’s Megan Miller.

Domestic violence occurs at an alarming rate in our society – 1 in 4 women in the U.S. is a victim of domestic violence sometime in her life, according to a news release. Even though we may not be aware of it, domestic violence occurs in our own community. Many victims of domestic violence believe they have nowhere to go and remain in life-threatening situations. They often fear for their lives and the lives of their children.

Helland will present information on the Grundy County Breaking Away Program, which assists victims in finding temporary safe housing; the Diversion Program, which is focused on reducing the rate of repeat domestic violence offenders; and will provide information on laws involving domestic battery.

Miller will present information on domestic violence and victims. She will inform attendees on how to assist a victim when they reach out for assistance, what services are available to victims in Grundy County and safety planning for victims of domestic violence.

There is no cost for this program and it is open to anyone who is interested. Contact Coal City United Methodist Church for information at 815-634-8670.
