Coal City high school administrators get raise

COAL CITY – Coal City Community Unit School District 1 board members voted unanimously this week to approve a 2.5 percent salary increase for two administrators.

The increases – for high school assistant principal Steve Hanson and middle school assistant principal and athletic director Jason Finkelstein – are for the 2014-15 school year. They also were given a one-year contract.

This action was taken at Wednesday’s school board meeting.

Hanson is completing his first year in his position as assistant principal, and Finkelstein has been in his position for three years.

“The board is happy with their performance, so they wanted to give them a cost-of-living increase,” Superintendent Kent Bugg said Thursday. “It’s typical for assistant principals in our district to be given one-year contracts.”

This will bring Hanson’s salary to $71,750, plus board-paid contribution to the teacher’s retirement system. Finkelstein’s salary will go to $65,955.08, plus board-paid contribution to the teacher’s retirement system.

The board also discussed searching for additional kindergarten teachers for the 2014-15 school year based on growing enrollment and when they should post the job openings.

“We currently have seven kindergarten sections. I’m sure we are going to need eight to keep the student numbers down to around 20,” Bugg said at the board meeting. “We may have to increase it to nine, once we get enrollment numbers.”

Bugg said he’d like to start searching for the eighth position right away versus waiting until enrollment numbers come in.

“Do it, go ahead and post it. It’s a necessary thing and money well spent,” board President Ken Miller said. “We want to be proactive rather then reactive.”

Vice President Shawn Hamilton said if the district has an addition, a reduction will be needed somewhere else. But he supported posting the job sooner rather than later.

“You might want to ask permission sooner. Sometimes, the last-minute hires don’t work out the best,” Hamilton said to Bugg during the meeting.

The board also voted to approve the employment of four other teachers for the 2014-15 school year, pending satisfactory completion of all state requirements: Jessica McNelis as a .25 full-time equivalency Spanish teacher at the high school; Katie McClellan as a special education teacher at the high school; Shannon Gasick as a Spanish teacher at the high school; and Mellissa Backus as a science teacher at the high school.
