Susan Raikes, of Marseilles, was recognized as Morris Hospital & Healthcare Centers’ Fire Starter of the Month for March.

MORRIS – Susan Raikes, of Marseilles, was recognized as Morris Hospital & Healthcare Centers’ Fire Starter of the Month for March for exemplifying what it means to be a team player.

Raikes joined the team at Morris Hospital in 2005 as an associate in the environmental services department, according to a news release from the hospital. She eventually requested an assignment that involved working solely in the family birthing suites, because she loves the atmosphere. Since then, she has established a reputation for being team oriented, compassionate and upbeat, even on the busiest of days.

“Sue is a complete team player,” wrote Morris Hospital family birthing suites nurse Karen Rinkenberger in nominating Raikes for Fire Starter of the Month. “She will make a bed when no one else has time. She will answer the phone if needed. She will rock a baby if we are busy. She is always willing to go above and beyond and will do anything to help without being asked. She is a complete asset to the Family Birthing Suites and makes a difference in all of our lives.”

Delores Perdue, supervisor of environmental services, refers to Raikes as a team leader.

“Sue is a person I can call on who either has the answer or can find the answer,” Perdue said in the release. “She is always so bright and cheerful. She fits in no matter where she is. She has a caring personality, and she’s very dependable.”

Raikes says she looks forward to coming to work every day, not only because she loves working in the suites, but because she enjoys seeing everybody in the hospital. She embraces every challenge, including quickly turning around the family birthing suites’ operating room after a cesarean delivery so it’s ready for the next delivery.

“I enjoy the challenge that every day brings,” Raikes said in the release. “It’s rewarding at the end of the day to be able to say, I did it.”

In early civilizations, fire starters were the individuals who had the important job of keeping the flame alive. As Fire Starter of the Month, Raikes received a Grundy County Chamber of Commerce gift certificate, a special “fire starter” lapel pin, and a designated parking spot for the month.
