Roundup: Coal City girls soccer moves on to sectional final

MANTENO – It took a while, but the saying goes that good things come to those who wait.

The Coal City girls soccer team, for one, is glad they waited.

After having their Class 1A Manteno Sectional semifinal against Chicago Carver Military Academy suspended due to lightning on Tuesday, the Coalers picked it up where they left off Wednesday and came home with a 1-0 win. Neither team had scored Tuesday when play was halted with 31:30 left in the second half.

Soon after they started Wednesday, in the half’s 26th minute, in fact, Coal City freshman midfielder Ashley Matusiak scored off an assist from Brittany Jezik.

The win propels Coal City (12-3) into the Sweet Sixteen, which is the furthest advancement in program history. The Coalers will take on host school Manteno on Friday at 5 p.m. for the sectional title and a berth in the Illinois Valley Central Super-Sectional, held in Chilicothe, on Tuesday.

Class 2A Morris Regional: Yorkville defeated Ottawa, 7-0, in Wednesday’s late game. The Foxes will play Morris at 1 p.m. on Saturday for the regional title.

Class 1A Serena Regional: Dwight’s season came to a close Wednesday with a 4-1 loss to Somonauk. Drew Jensen drove in the lone run for the Trojans, while Ryan Folkers added a double. Ryan Gaston suffered the loss on the mound, striking out three in 3 1⁄3 innings.

Coal City 9, Kankakee 4: Makenna Emerson hit a three-run home run to put the Coalers (17-14) ahead, 4-2, while Mady Bunton delivered a double and a triple. Emily Aichele was the winning pitcher.
