Roundup: Coal City baseball advances to regional semifinals

COAL CITY – It got close at the end, but Coal City’s baseball team hung on to defeat Streator, 5-4, in the Class 3A Morris Regional on Monday.

Brad Littleton hit a two-run homer in the first inning to help the Coalers build a 5-0 lead after four, then came on to get the save for in the seventh after Streator had scored two in the fifth and two in the seventh to make it, 5-4. Third-seeded Coal City will play No. 2 seed LaSalle-Peru on Thursday at 4:30 p.m. in Morris.

Nate Chapman started for the Coalers and went five innings, allowing three hits and two earned runs. Zack Mellen threw the sixth, surrendering a pair of earned runs before Littleton fanned two in the seventh. The Coalers’ Lane Cowherd had two hits.


Morris 10, Andrew 2: The bats came out in full force for the Redskins on Saturday, who finished the regular season with a 26-9 record. Tyler Bordner went 2 for 2 with five RBIs, including hitting a grand slam in the third inning. Trevor Lines (double, RBI), Tim Smyk (RBI), Geno Persico (2 RBIs) and Matt Bernickus all had two hits, while Kyle Hill (RBI) and Eric Robinson each had a hit.

Winning pitcher Nick Evola (8-3) went two innings, allowing one hit and no walks while striking out three. Smyk started and gave up two runs, one of them earned, before Evola took over in the third. Brock Kukman came on for the fifth and Lines threw the last two.

Morris JV 5, Andrew 0: Three different Morris pitchers combined for a no-hitter. Brock Kukman threw the first two innings, Ricky Pelnarsh threw the next two, and Eric Robinson came on to finish in the 5th. Tom Cheshareck and Thomas Dabney each doubled for Morris, while Eric Robinson, Matt Darlington, and Gabe Sajnaj had the other hits. The JV squad finishes at 2-2.

Gardner-South Wilmington 4, Somonauk 3: GSW won the Class 1A Serena Regional behind the pitching of Blake Marks and taking full advantage of just two hits offensively. Jack Davidson and Kyle Robison each had an RBI single to lead the Panthers to their first regional title in 21 years. Marks allowed just four hits. GSW moves on to play Thursday against Chicago Luther North in the Putnam County Secitonal at 4:30 p.m.


Gardner-South Wilmington 1, Grant Park 0: An RBI double by Maranda Residori drove in winning pitcher Emily Foley with the game’s only run in the fifth inning to give the Panthers (19-6) the Class 1A Grant Park Regional title. Foley fired a two-hitter with a walk and seven strikeouts. GSW takes on Dwight on Tuesday in the semifinals of the Gardner-South Wilmington Sectional at 4:30.
