Roundup: Illinois Vintage Stock Car Series visits Grundy County Speedway

MORRIS – The Illinois Vintage Stock Car Series makes its annual visit to the Grundy County Speedway tonight. The series features replica 1950, ’60 and ’70s style stock cars from the good old days of Chicagoland racing. Tom Jones, “The Zero Hero,” will be back behind the wheel in a Jerry Kemperman tribute car. Jones is a weekly Chicagoland competitor, Illinois Hall of Fame member and a 1981 Grundy County Speedway champion.

Many former drivers, owners and crew members are expected to be on hand for this special night. A full program of racing is on tap, including the high-powered machines of the Illinois Truck & Equipment Super Late Models, The McMahon Transport Group Midam Sportsman, Street Stock and STARS Promotion 4 Cylinders. Spectators will be in for a full night of racing with five divisions, all for the regular admission price: adults $12, seniors $10 and children 11 and younger free. There also is free parking.

June 27: Midam 40 Special  presented by Digital fuel Solutions.

July 4: Magnaboso “70” Late Model Event, plus full stock car program.

Stock car racing takes place every Friday night through Labor Day. The gates open at 5:30 p.m., with time trials set for 6:45 and the first race getting the green flag at 8. Four division feature races will highlight the program, including Illinois Truck & Equipment Super Late Model, The McMahon Transport Group MidAm Sportsman, Street Stocks, and STARS Promotions 4-Cylinders.

Braidwood Shootout: The 2014 Exelon Braidwood Shootout begins at 10 a.m. today as defending champion Reed-Custer takes on Serena. Newark will play Beecher at 2 p.m. and will play again at 4 p.m. win or lose. Dwight also plays at 2 p.m. and again at 4 p.m., win or lose. In the frosh-soph tournament, Morris’ sophomore team will play Manteno at 8 a.m. Saturday, with the freshman team taking on Dwight at 9 a.m. The sophomores will play at 10 a.m. win or lose, with the freshmen playing at 11 a.m. win or lose. Both teams will play again at 1 p.m., as well.
