MORRIS – A 3-year-old child drowned in an above-ground pool Sunday afternoon.
Grundy County Coroner John Callahan’s office is investigating the apparent drowning that occurred in Morris, according to a news release sent Sunday night from Callahan's office.
The preliminary reports indicate Liam Vaughn, 3, was at a family member’s home with his parents Mark and Ashley Vaughn, Callahan said in the news release. There were many family members in the backyard and several children in the pool midday Sunday.
The child's mother went inside the home to check on another child and the father was standing on a deck near the pool. The child had gotten out of the pool and had taken his water floats off his arms to eat.
"In just a brief moment, Liam apparently jumped back into the pool without the floats. Within a moment, dad realized Liam was not by the food and then saw his son face down in the pool," Callahan said in the release.
The boy's father jumped in and retrieved his son, and he and his wife immediately began CPR, according to the news release. A 911 call was placed and Liam was transported to Morris Hospital where he was pronounced dead shortly after 4 p.m.
The Grundy County Coroner’s Office along with Morris police are investigating the drowning. An examination was planned to take place Sunday.
