MARSEILLES – Authorities are still searching for a man who jumped into the Illinois River to cool off Sunday, but never made it back to the boat he was on.
At about 4:40 p.m. conservation police received a call that a boater had entered the water, but had not resurfaced for 20 minutes, Chris Young, spokesman for the Illinois Department of Natural Resources said Monday.
Officers who arrived on scene were told the man jumped into the river to cool off, but was unable to return due to the current, Young said.
Officers used sonar equipment to try and find the man. Conservation officers, Seneca, Marseilles and Ottawa responders searched for missing swimmer until severe weather hit the area Sunday night.
The search resumed at 9:30 a.m. Monday and is ongoing, Young said.
