Twelve participants completed June 18 in the fourth session of the Financial Skills Academy put on by We Care of Grundy County.

The goal of the Financial Skills Academy is to teach financial literacy to We Care clients interested in learning how to improve their financial status, according to a news release from the organization.

Once a month since January, a sponsor taught a unit of the financial literacy curriculum – such as tax preparation, budgeting, proper use of credit and insurance – to participants.

Participants who completed five of the six classes were entered in a drawing to receive up to $700 toward one month’s rent. Gift cards for $50 in gas were given to other participants.

Banks that participated in this session of the Financial Skills Academy include: First Midwest Bank, Grundy Bank, Mazon State Bank and Standard Bank. In January, Paul Zabel, a local CPA, shared information about filing income taxes and tax incentives for low-income families. Cassie Ferrari from Illinois Insurance Consultants provided information about insurance basics to the last class.

The next semester of the Financial Skills Academy will start in January 2015. We Care is now taking names of those who would like to participate in this program. For information, to participate or to be a sponsor, contact We Care at 815-942-6389.

We Care is a nonprofit agency that provides emergency assistance to Grundy County residents in the form of food, rent, utility and prescription assistance. We Care is located at 520 W. Illinois Ave., Morris. For information, visit www.wecareofgrundy.com.
