Four reported dead in I-55 crash

ELWOOD – Police on the scene say four people are dead after an accident involving one semitrailer and three cars on Interstate 55 near Arsenal Road.

The accident happened sometime after 2 p.m. Monday in the northbound lanes.

I-55 is shut down in both directions with another semitrailer accident having occurred at about the same time in the southbound lanes.

One semitrailer rear-ended another in the southbound lanes near the Route 6 interchange near Channahon shortly after the fatal accident happend.

Illinois State Police and multiple fire departments are working on the accident, according to an alert sent by authorities. All traffic north and south of the accident scene is being diverted, and delays are expected on Interstate 80, Route 6 and Route 53 as traffic is being moved away from the accident scene.
