MORRIS – On Friday, LyondellBasell employees donated more than $750 to help We Care of Grundy County obtain 6,951 pounds of food from the Northern Illinois Food Bank and provided volunteers to unload the truck and stock the shelves.
“This is a great team-bonding experience and we enjoy giving back to the community by helping those in need,” said Larry Zazeski, who heads the company’s annual Global Care Day fund drive, which makes the company’s significant contributions possible.
For many years, LyondellBasell employees have filled We Care’s pantry four to six times a year thanks to the Global Care Day fund drive with matching grants from the company.
During the month since the last Fill the Pantry, We Care has helped 270 families from its pantry.
We Care receives a monthly delivery of food from the Northern Illinois Food Bank. The bank is able to provide food, cleaning and personal hygiene products to food pantries at prices that are unattainable in grocery stores, such as 12-ounce boxes of snack crackers for 11 cents each or 17-ounce jars of natural fruit spread for 9 cents each.
In addition to the food We Care purchases with the donations, the food pantry also receives food that is provided for free as part of the Emergency Food Program.
The program provides canned salmon, apple sauce, cranberry sauce, cranberry juice, raisins, dried cranberries, spaghetti sauce, peanut butter, whole chickens and more.
Upcoming Fill the Pantry sponsors include Morris Hospital and Talty Chevrolet.
