Roundup: ‘Candyman 33’ Special at Grundy Speedway tonight

Street Stocks take center stage

MORRIS – A super line up is set for tonight, as the Street Stocks take center stage for the “Candyman 33” Special in a 33-lap main event honoring former Street Stock competitor Ed “The Candyman” Mahoney.

A full program of stockcar racing in four divisions - including the lightning-fast Illinois Truck & Equipment Super Late Models, The McMahon Transport Group MidAm Sportsman, Street Stocks and STARS Promotion 4 Cylinder Pure Stocks - is on the docket.


Aug. 8 – Full stock car program plus pickup truck “Tug Of War”

Aug. 15 – 5th Annual “Frank Welch 94” presented by Rod Baker Ford

Aug. 22 – Full stock car program (Rain date for Welch 94 or Candyman 33 if needed).

Stock car racing continues every Friday night through Labor Day at the Grundy County Speedway. The gates open Friday at 5:30 p.m., with time trials set for 6:45 p.m., and the first race getting the green flag at 8. Four Division feature races will highlight the program Including Illinois Truck & Equipment Super Late Model, The McMahon Transport Group MidAm Sportsman, Street Stocks, and STARS Promotions 4 Cylinders. Tickest are $12 for adults, $10 for seniors, and children 11 and younger are free. Parking also is free.

The track is at 8890 N. Route 47, one mile north of I-80 at the Grundy County Fairgrounds in Morris.


Coal City: A meeting fror anyone who has a student that plans on playing a sport during any of the three seasons at Coal City High School will be held Aug. 7 at 7 p.m. Enter the school at the Events Entry doors.


Minooka: Minooka will be offering free sports physicals on Aug. 9 at Central Campus, Door 1 from 8-11 a.m. This is open to all sophomore, junior and senior athletes. All student-athletes must have a current physical on file with the school nurse’s office. Every physical must have been performed within 395 days to be current. Freshman students may use their freshman entrance physical toward their requirement. Sophomore, junior and senior students must turn in a completed IHSA/IESA physical form to the athletic office. These forms are available at mchs.net and in the Athletic Director’s office. Contact the Athletic Office with questions or concerns at 815-467-2140, ext 135. Physicals will be given on a first come-first served basis.


Dwight Rebels 14U Tryouts: Tryouts will take place on Saturday from 1 to 4 p.m. at Dwight High School. Please contact Chuck Butterbrodt at 815-584-5176 or email butterbrodt@gmail.com for questions or information.


Morris High School practice: Girls interested in coming out for the MCHS girls tennis team, please meet on the MCHS courts on Aug. 13 from 9 a.m. to noon for the first day of practice. Please make sure all necessary paperwork is turned in to the school nurse in order to participate in practice.
