Covel Creek Concert tickets on sale

SOUTH OTTAWA – The Concert at Covel Creek, an annual fundraiser in south Ottawa, will celebrate its fifth anniversary Saturday by welcoming the event’s inaugural musical act back to the outdoor stage.

Tickets for the Chicago Brass Quintet are available for purchase.

Named for the winding creek bordering the property of nonprofit agency Ottawa Friendship House, the concert gives locals an opportunity to view the majestic, Ravinia-style arena, according to a news release from event organizers. Concert-goers also have the satisfaction of knowing their dollars benefit a good cause.

Reciting the concert’s signature tagline, “Outdoor Elegance. Musical Splendor. A Picnic with Pizzazz,” Beth Mangold, executive director at Ottawa Friendship House, said attendees are encouraged to pack food and drink of their choosing and bringa comfortable chair or blanket for the viewing.

Concert organizers have teamed up with the Cheese Shop to offer a special picnic lunch, available for pick up before the event. Three varieties are available for $9.25 a box, including utensils. An assortment of fresh fruit, pasta salad, assorted cheese cubes, raw vegetables with dip and various desserts are among the selections available.

Box orders may be made in advance by stopping by 1219 Fulton St. or by calling 815-433-0478.

“In addition to the return of some great food options, we’re also happy to welcome our area student performers back to the stage like in past years,” said Mangold, who expected to announce the names of the local students in the coming weeks.

“We’ve also added another local element this year,” she said. “Ottawa native Tod Bowermaster will join us and offer a special guest performance.”

Bowermaster plays the French horn. He performs with the St. Louis Symphony, where he has held the position of third horn since 1995.

Tickets are $20 and $10 for students age 18 and younger. Concert grounds include free parking and are on Ottawa Friendship House property at 1718 N. 2525 Road, south of Ottawa.

Gates open at 4 p.m., with the event kicking off at 5 p.m. In case of inclement weather, the concert will relocate to the Central Intermediate School auditorium at 711 E. McKinley Road.
