Roundup: Coal City opens title defense with sweep of Bourbonnais

COAL CITY – The Coal City eighth-grade baseball team opened up its season in defense of last year’s state championship with a doubleheader sweep over Bourbonnais, 14-1 and 11-3, Saturday.

Payton Hutchings and Keegan Gagliardo both pitched well in picking up victories.

Strong relief stints were made by Jack Bunton and Austin Pullara as the two combined for eight strikeouts, one hit and one walk.

Gagliardo, the lone returning starter, had six hits on the day. Dustyn Muzzarelli had five hits, including a three-run homer.

Connor Best had four hits and three RBIs.

Mickey McDowell collected three hits and four runs scored. Hutchings added a solo homer in Game 2.

“We played really well for the opening day,“ Coal City coach Jerry McDowell said. “Our hitters made contact at the plate and the pitchers all did a good job at the throwing strikes.”
