Roundup: Morris Chiefs beat Wilmington to open season

MORRIS – The Morris Chiefs varsity football team was the only one in the program to record a win in Saturday’s season-opening games, defeating the Wilmington Bobcast, 26-19.

Chad McElrath led Morris with 74 rushing yards, while Daqwon Hopper ran for 62. McElrath added a 60-yard punt return and scored on runs of eight and seven yards. Hopper had a 27-yard run for a score, while Austin Hatcher returned a punt 37 yards for a touchdown. Hatcher also added a pair of extra-point kicks. Nathan Sendra ran for 11 yards for the Chiefs, while the defense was led by Dakota Revels with five tackles and Hatcher with a tackle and two sacks. Mason Young-Voss had three tackles, while Adrian Cervantes had two tackles.

Wilmington scored a 33-6 win in junior varsity action, as Darrion Hopper scored the lone Chiefs touchdown on a 29-yard run. Jason Barnett led the team with 47 rushing yards, while Hopper had four tackles and Jorge Loza had three tackles and a sack. Evan Lindemuth added three tackles.

In lightweight play, Wilmington defeated the Chiefs, 35-0. Christopher Gonzalez led Morris with 16 rushing yards, while Zak Alesky highlighted the defense with an interception. Christopher Gonzales had two tackles and recovered a fumble as well.

The Bobcats upended the Chiefs, 25-6 on the superlight level, despite 44 rushing yards, including an eight-yard touchdown run, by Dimitri Lindemuth. Demetrius Hopper added 27 rushing yards and had six tackles and two fumble recoveries on defense. Lindemuth had four tackles and a pass defended, while Logan Sparrow and Alex Grieff had two tackles each.


Braidwood 10, GSW 9 (11 innings): Joey Morales, Conner Vyce and Matthew Weppwrecht had three hits apiece for GSW. Weppwrecht and Morales each had three RBIs, while Michael Ashley had two hits and two RBIs.

GSW 12, Elwood 4: Winning pitcher Joey Morales was 3 for 3 with a double, home run and four RBIs for GSW, while Nathan Wozniak had three hits. Matthew Weppwrecht had two RBIs, while Kade Kociss added two hits.


Minooka 9, Shabbona 1: After getting off to a slow start by conceding a goal in the opening minute, Minooka (2-0) rallied with nine unanswered goals. Frank Thompson and Carlos Zamora each scored twice for the Indians. Wilbert Rivas, Dakota Nelson, Conor Waldron, Myles Roussos, and Brandon Mesinas all scored once. Defensively, Jake Mensik and Nick Beasley each played a solid game.


Minooka 12 Shabbona 0: Allie Vandergrift led the 16-hit Minooka attack with three hits, while Amber Zilinger, Brooke Sulima, Stephanie Nolan, Kynsey Cryder, and Maddy Muzzey all had two hits. Vandergrift and Sulima combined to pitch a one-hit shutout.
